FAQ

FAQ

FAQ-

What can you do for me?

We’re here to help you look good in photos and on video. We take photos at events and for industry shoots and are a one stop shop for video planning, shooting and editing.

We specialise in drone photos and video with many years of commercial drone operations experience.

And when the weather is fine in the Northwest were busy making wedding films.

Are you experienced with photography and videography on the ground as well as the air?

Yes!

Where are you located and what areas do you service?

From our base in Broome, Western Australia we can service the entire Kimberley and Pilbara regions and easily work from remote sites for extended periods.

Why use a licensed drone operator?

It minimises your exposure to risk.

Having a CASA license enables us to provide public liability insurance and our operators are fully trained and fully qualified drone pilots with over 40 years of experience operating a range of remote piloted aircraft.

To fly drones professionally in Australia you and your company must hold an Operator's Certification.  All Pilots that fly under your OC must have a controller's certificate.

What is a UAV/UAS?

UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) or UAS (Unmanned Aerial System) are just fancy names for a drone.  This is an aircraft that is remote or computer piloted and doesn’t have a person inside it controlling it directly.

How far can you fly? And how high?

We are restricted by CASA to only fly our UAS as far away as we can still control it visually, this is usually a few hundred meters.  For a larger job we will usually do several flights from different locations around the site to get the best shots.  We're required by CASA to fly below 120m at all times, but this can be negotiable if you have a specialised requirement, call us and we'll see what we can do.

How long can you fly?

This depends on the aircraft, our main video/photo drone has a flight time of 8-10 minutes per flight and smaller aircraft up to 25 minutes.  We recharge on site so can do as many flights as needed.  Our winged survey aircraft can stay in the air for as long as 45 minutes.

Are you insured?

We have UAV insurance through a reputable aircraft insurer, with P/L up to $10million.  We are also insured for ground based photography up to $5million.

What can’t you do?

The guidelines about where and when we can operate are tightly regulated by CASA and defined as part of our licensing with them, this is an evolving policy which does have a degree of flexibility.  Please contact us with your needs and we can discuss wether or not they're possible.

What equipment do you operate?

Sony A7r3 and A7M2 cameras with stabilisers

Inspire with X5R camera

Phantom 4 quadcopter

Skyhunter winged aircraft for mapping

About Boab UAS

Who is BOAB UAS?

Matt had been flying RC and taking video/photos from aircraft for four years before deciding to make the move to professional UAV operators.

Boab UAS currently have CASA approval and are fully insured.

Matt spent years working in laboratories by day and playing in pub bands by night, now he combines his artistic and technical skill in drone flying everyday at Boab UAS.  From a young age Matt dreamed of flight, as a young child he demanded that family call him Matthew Bird and his love of aircraft followed him through to adulthood.  Matt was a late-comer to RC but took to it rapidly, flying and filming with winged aircraft for several years before making tentative steps into rotorcraft.

You still might spot Matt, unwinding from a hard day operating drones, by flying aerobatics with a scale WW2 warbird on the secluded beaches around Broome.
